WSCA Confidentiality Guide 

Confidentiality is the pillar of school counseling practices. This works to ensure that the

student’s privacy is maintained and respected. School counselors are committed to

providing a safe and welcoming environment for students that allows for the comfort of

sharing their perspectives. The confidentiality of a student is not absolute and there are

limits that are important and exceptions that must be made aware of.

Recommended 504 Team Planning Template 

In 2021 the Legislature passed Substitute Senate Bill (SSB) 5030, which clarifies the role of school counselors to align with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. (See OSPI Bulletin 083-21.) The bill requires districts to develop and implement a comprehensive school counseling program (CSCP) for all its schools. Among other requirements, CSCPs must/should outline the ways in which schools meet Section 504 requirements—in ways that minimize the administrative 504 tasks assigned to school counselors and to maximize the education-related work school counselors have been trained for, including related to Section 504. This planning tool is designed to assist district and/or building leaders assess, and revise as necessary, its systems for meeting its obligations under Section 504.
